Batting first, all six Newport batsmen contributed on their way to 202-0 (G Bricknell 26no, Tom Dye 33no, Harry Dye 30no, Stuart Gurney 26no, M Herbert 28no). Needing to score runs from the outset, two early run-outs effectively ended St Helens dim hopes of a successful chase, finishing on 92-3. Niton booked their place in the quarter-finals after posting 153-2 (G Drake-Knight 29no, J Wells 26no, D Fairman 26no), easily brushing aside the challenge of IW Health Associates for just 75-4. In the other half of the draw at Fairway Sports Complex, Ryde Cavaliers Nomads upset the odds to defeat Ryde Cavaliers by just 9 runs. Nomads batted first, reaching 117-5 (C Higgins 51no) from their 12 overs, then securing the win by bowling out the Cavaliers 1st team for 109. FSC secured another easy win, bowling GKN II out for just 96 (Alan Johns 32, Phil Mew 4-8), chasing down the low score for the loss of three wickets. In a closer match, Island Bakeries notched up 137-5 (Sam Richards 48no) before bowling out Northwood for 113 (G Paddock 44, Ashley Goldsmith 26). Godshill and IW Prison Officers were gifted places in the final eight, after their respective opponents failed to field a team. |
