IOW Under 15 Girls v Wiltshire @ Leighton Sports Ground Westbury Wiltshire Thursday 28th May 2009 After losing the toss on a cloudy but warm afternoon the Isle of Wight Under 15 Girls’ under the leadership of Captain Alex Barton were put into bat. After 15 overs, when our first wicket fell, Wiltshire may have regretted this decision. The Island Girls’ had raced onto 96 runs with Rowan Treagus the batter out for 6. Her opening partner Alex had plundered their bowlers and was on 66 not out. Another wicket fell at 113 and then the wicket the Wiltshire team wanted desperately fell on 117. Alex was out but had scored 80 glorious runs, which included 9 boundaries. She was unlucky to be given out as the delivery should have been signalled a no-ball by the umpire. Runs were hard to come by after this, and wickets fell at regular intervals. The Island eventually finishing on 146 for 7 wickets off of their 35 overs. After 45 extras the second top scorer was Melissa Dear who scored 8. With a good total on the board the bowlers started exceptionally with a wicket in the first over, an LBW decision for Alex Barton. There was also success for the other opening bowler, Ellie Furmidge, who bowled their number three batter for a duck in the second over. We continued to bowl with great discipline and field to an excellent standard, reducing the Wiltshire team to 48 all out in the 14th over. There were wickets for Alex Barton 1 for 6 off of 3 overs, Ellie Furmidge 3 for 17 off of 4 overs, Caitlin Heelan 3 for 13 off of 4 overs and Sophie Goldsmith 1 for 8 off of 3 overs. There were also direct run-outs for Caitlin and Sophie. The Island Girls’ had won by 98 runs – their first victory for many years. It was a great display of teamwork, with Captain Alex Barton outstanding with the bat and Ellie Furmidge and Caitlin Heelan fantastic with the ball. |
